Channel surfing: Documentaries save the night

    The Secret Life of the American Teen- ager: Brenda Hampton, the woman behind 7th Heaven, created this new series. Shailene Woodley stars as Amy, a pregnant teen surrounded by people, including her parents, who have problems of their own. An ’80s icon, Molly Ringwald, plays Amy’s mom. 7 p.m., FAM

    Wide Angle: Season seven of this PBS documentary series begins with Heart of Darfur, about unrest in the genocide-stricken region of western Sudan, the site of what the United Nations has called "the worst humanitarian crisis in the world." Aaron Brown anchors the report. 9 p.m., KERA/Channel 13

    Explorer: Gorilla Murders: The documentary series reports on the shooting of six rare mountain gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo Virunga National Park, considered one of the most dangerous places in the world because of human violence, and on the response after photojournalist Brent Stirton’s pictures of the gorillas’ bodies were smuggled out of the volatile country. 9 p.m., NGC
