Blue Mesa Grill wins customers with every Sunday brunch.
But the Southwestern grill has just won its biggest award ever: third place for "Best Brunch in the World."
Blue Mesa dishes up enchiladas and fajitas every Sunday in Fort Worth and at a lunch buffet Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays in Southlake.
The award is promoted as a juried prize given by the first International Restaurant & Hotel Awards, a California-based travel awards company.
Blue Mesa won the award in the "value" category, up against other $17 brunches instead of the $42 hotel spreads like Fearing’s in Dallas, which won second place in the luxury category.
The Blue Mesa buffet usually features Santa Fe flavors such as migas, blue corn cheese enchiladas and adobe pie, along with fish, chicken and salads. It’s served Sundays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Blue Mesa is at 1600 S. University Drive, Fort Worth, 817-332-MESA, or 1586 E. Southlake Blvd., 817-416-0055; www.bluemesagrill.com.
The wine bars have arrived.
On the heels of the new Wine Loft in Southlake, a Fort Worth landmark has reopened as a restaurant and wine bar.
Winslow’s Wine Cafe replaced an old gas station at Camp Bowie and Clover Lane. Owner Joe Berry offers a simple menu of pizzas and salads along with wines in a bright, contemporary setting. He’ll add a patio with a fire pit.
He promises a Sunday brunch menu and later hours soon. Right now, Winslow’s is open until 10 p.m. weekdays, 11 on weekends; 4101 Camp Bowie Blvd., 817-731-6515, winslowswinecafe.com.
Fred’s Texas Cafe is taking walk-ins.
The tiny Fort Worth steak-and-hamburger cafe is surrounded by construction. But you can still walk in from Morton Street, despite the construction barricades that block traffic from West Seventh Street.
Fred’s is surrounded by new retail development. But the tiny 1950 cafe remains unchanged, serving lunch and dinner specials and Sunday brunch.
It’s open for lunch and dinner daily except Mondays at 915 Currie St.; 817-332-0083.
And one correction from last week: The Star Cafe, the chicken-fried legend in the Stockyards, is open Sunday nights for dinner but closed Monday nights.
